Can smart TV’s be made to catch fire through a malicious software update?

With the prevalence of Chinese-government owned companies selling bargain electronics around the world I was considering just how devastating it might be if every single Hisense tv (or similar device) in the US or UK caught fire simultaneously.
Can the firmware/software in these smart tv’s be made to fail catastrophically like this? I understand that people aren’t just going to stop purchasing these devices, so aside from isolating them from the internet what else can we do to limit risk? …
