Can repair shops steal data from your Android phone?

My phone's display is dead. I have intimate pictures on my phone. Pattern lock enabled. Is it possible for the repairman to steal my files in some manner?

Please advise, I am freaking out about it. There are some files of nostalgic value on the phone which I want to salvage. So, I would also like to know if there is any way I can recover those without actually going to a service station.
