Can backups get encrypted during a ransomware attack?

let's say files on my pc1 are encrypted but I had a folder getting synced with google drive plugin.. do the files in the gdrive get encrypted also?
Or will gdrive backup files and keep doing its thing as and when the files get encrypted one by one and will just keep backing up the encrypted files to the gdrive?
This is just an example I thought of, it could be any backup software, how do we protect …
