Buying similar domains - how good ”security for the buck”?

Hey all,

Before I started, my coworkers have been buying a lot of similar-named domains to ours, or same but with various top domains.

We are a e-commerce so the web is obviously key to us.

Now our registrar found a two newly registered domains similar to ours, one also with certificate.

Question is if it’s worth 2k usd to buy, transfer etc? Feels expensive.
