Best solution for data storage and image acquisition in home environment

My job occasionally (not often) requires me to do live logical imaging of a laptop or similar device.

I'm struggling to find a good and fast solution to this.

I have tried:

- usb drives but sometimes the target machine doesn't accept this and there are issues trying to resolve it.

- a direct connected hard drive store (similar to NAS) but it connects directly to the host computer

- over the network to a shared drive
