Beginner here (6 months in a year-long course), assuming I can capture DNS packets, could I in theory capture them, then send back a response to the node that sent the query posing as the DNS server?

I am doing a year long Cyber Security and in the next few weeks we are going to be split into teams (attack and defence) with one side protecting a network made up of a few nodes a few years old on AWS (one of the servers I remember is ubuntu 16.04 so fairly old, unsure if on ESM or not for security updates, my assumption is no).

So since that will be soon I have been thinking of possible …
