Are ransomware attacks accelerating or is it just coincidence?

Never in my life have I been personally affected by a ransomware attack, until now, and now in the past month 1) I can not access my medical schedule or documents from my healthcare provider which runs 32 hospitals, and 2) my states court system has gone completely non-digital due to being hacked.

Both organizations are completely down digitally.
