Apple Devices, Device Lock Passphrase, and iCloud "End-To-End" Encryption

From what I have gathered thus far, when using iCloud and enabling end-to-end encryption, the user is prompted for their device lock passphrase. A encrypt/decrypt key is derived from that device lock passphrase but that actual passphrase never leaves the Apple device. You remain the only one who knows/has it.
Is this understanding correct?
For those knowledgeable on Apple devices and encryption/security, is it an absolute *must* that you provide your device lock passphrase in order for iCloud end-to-end encryption …
