Anyone have an M1 MacBook with a disconnected microphone? Not sure what the trade offs are

I have an Intel MacBook Air that'll stop getting updates soon. I had opened that MacBook when I got it and physically disconnected the mic and camera because I don't need them. I was looking at the M1's and it seems I can disconnect the mic array, but not the camera, which I can tape over.

I saw someone on iFixIt's forums say removing the mic array "sends the CPU into lockdown mode" or something. Has anyone with an M1 …
