Android phones security - Can data be retrieved

I have been increasingly worried about my private data in my phone, specially when a friend of mine told me that they have a special set of hardware that decrypts the phone data and potentially retrieve everything in it.

I know Android phones have disks encrypted by default, but how true the above claims are ?
