Can someone clear up for me why there is this controversy about whether or not to make yourself invisible on a network?

It seems to make sense to do so because you can’t attack what you can’t see, but actually it turns out that the SSID is not staying quiet at all but constantly sends out signals which then in turn draws attention because now “they” are aware of something that’s trying to hide.
