Why would a government agency use fiber optic to connect all their devices, even printers?

I was inside a certain government agency a short while ago and the security nerd in me noticed that everything inside of their office was connected via fiber. I first noticed it when there were two red "cables" sticking out of one of their printers, and once I realized it was fiber connection I was very confused. "Why does a printer need fiber optic?"
