Why use UDP scanning over TCP ?

My understanding is that UDP scanning is slower than TCP since it identifies open ports by not receiving any messages (whereas closed ports would be identified if the port responds with « unreachable »).
However, it cannot differenciate between filtered and open since both would lead to a non-response.
