Sharing passport/ID via hotel apps or airbnb when traveling

The problem is that many check ins are done online and the hosts ask for passport via the hotel app, airbnb or sometimes WhatsApp.
Wondering if there's a better way to share it that's not so invasive, or what do you guys who travel do?
