Fediverse? Other options?…

Trying to rid my life of surveillance capitalism and big tech… Degoogling, self hosting, you name it. Naturally, got interested in Fediverse. Popped the hood of Mastodon and… *Dafuq is dis, a honeypot?!* This thing is ripe for abuse and data leaks. Somewhat reminds me of a good ol' Fidonet… Amateur hour, even from my amateur POV.

So my question is… Is there a "social networking" platform (part of Fediverse or not) out there that is:
