can someone explain cyber-ransom

I work for a hospital in Florida who is currently under a cyber hack. Internet, computer system, fax, orders, labs, referrals, imaging, surgeries etc… is shut down. Our hospital is on complete divert.

Rumor is we are being “cyber-ransom”. Can someone explain what this is? who does the ransoming? how is it paid? how are negotiations made?
