Are cybersecurity research opportunities a thing?

I’m a university student, and I always see pre-med and pre-dental students going for research as it’s good on their resume and they get paid as well. Sometimes it can even be incorporated in their university. My question is, does that exist for cybersecurity? Or would that just be internships?
