I assume that scanned or digitized versions of a birth certificate, Social Security card, drivers license, or other such private PII would be worthless, as any authority that needs these as proof of who you are need the physical copy.

So again, is there any value to scanning such documents? Worst case scenario, you lose all these documents in a fire, will digitized versions be of any use?
