Application whitelist software - is it worth it?

As per the title. I'm an IT manager with a small team and 500 users. We have been looking at some solutions to help bolster our cybersecurity this year - but none of us are cybersec experts by any means. A big one that keeps coming up in app whitelisting. We looked at the MS applocker but it looks clunky and not really that great.
