Anonymously buy and activate a cell phone??

I guess it’s easy enough to buy a used one off Facebook or pay cash at Walmart. But is it possible today to activate a line without giving your name, address, credit card, dob, etc? Is this what burner phones are for? And do people do this for long periods of time?
